That's correct, the old term 32bit meant a regular 24bit image with an 8bit alpha channel, which is misleading because a 24 bit image is only 8bits

It has what is called an Indexed Color palette. A part of the PNG file structure holds pointers to 256 colors and then each pixel in the image gets its color from one of those pointers.
